Dictionary

I thought it would be helpful to supply a cheat-sheet for terms frequently used throughout the blog. You can also find it in the tabs section above by clicking, "Dictionary."

ADHD / ADD
Abbreviations for "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" and "Attention Deficit Disorder."

Attention Deficit Disorder
Used interchangeably with "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder," but currently the less popular version. See: definition for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder below.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
"Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate impulsivity, inattention, and in some cases, hyperactivity" (CHADD.org). Not to be confused with learning disabilities, ADHD fosters individuals of heightened creativity, athleticism, and intelligence. For symptoms of ADHD, please see the Resources section.

Badger Mind
Playing off the honey badger icon, made popular by such videos as this one, "badger mind" describes the cranky, impatient mindset that we ADHD'rs can fall into. ADHD Meltdowns: Don't be a Honey Badger! encourages readers to recognize their overflow of emotion and reconsider what they're so darn crabby about.

Dissolving the Self
First introduced in the post Creativity: Release your Subconscious Mind, "dissolving the self" describes the process of letting your ego fall away so that you can focus. Derived from the Buddhist concept, it is often referenced in Zen meditation; "When we meditate I encourage all of us to have the attitude that we are meditating to dissolve the self" (No Self No Problem by Anan Thubten, pg. 50).

Monkey Mind
Another Zen motif, the "monkey mind" describes the fun-seeking, distracted mindset that those of us with ADHD frequently experience. Mentioned in my premiere post On my contempt for reading..., this mindset can be let loose during creative activities or harnessed to encourage more focused, linear endeavors.
