#WhatShouldWeCallMe: Top 10 GIFs and ADHD

I have a confession to make. I absolutely love the Tumblr blog #WhatShouldWeCallMe.

During my afternoon slump, it gives me the burst of energy (and laughter) I need to power through the end of the day. If you have yet to hear of this delightful blog, here is how the sensation of What Should We Call Me got its start. According to The Huffington Post: “Two college BFFs move to opposite coasts for law school and stay in touch via G-chat, sending each other funny GIFs to describe and share events, situations, and the way they're feeling. The girls decide to turn their GIF convos into a Tumblr page, which goes viral and now receives between one and two million hits per day.”

To continue with my “Pop Culture” series, here are my top ten favorite Memes from What Should We Call Me and how they relate to ADHD.*

*Just a heads up: some of these may be inappropriate for our younger audience members.

1. WHEN MY FRIENDS SEE ME DRESSED UP FOR AN INTERVIEW
Those of us with ADHD despise anything inauthentic. “Phonies,” as Holden Caulfield calls them, make our skin crawl and nasty words spring from our tongues. Un/fortunately, we all have to button up our suits and personalities every now and again and act with the decorum of polished “adults.”

2. WHEN I SPOT MY TWO BEST FRIENDS HAVING FUN WITHOUT ME
Oh, that prickly form of ADHD. How it flares up whenever anyone thwarts you or steals your mighty ADHD power. I would say, “calm down,” but whenever anyone tells me to “calm down," I get even more peeved. Just remember: if your friends are hanging out without you, it doesn’t mean they love you any less.

3. AFTER I STARE AT MY COMPUTER SCREEN FOR TOO LONG
From the series “ADHD and the Seven Deadly Sins,” you should already know that there’s a lot to be learned from the three-toed sloth. Here’s one more lesson: remember to take breaks from your computer/internet browser/video games. Those of us with ADHD have a tendency to hyper focus on those rare activities that consume our full attentions. If you’re legs have fallen asleep beneath you, you’re probably spending too much time on gchat / tumblr / PS3 / HBOGO.

4. SATURDAY
This principle applies to many twenty-somethings and above. Have a good time on Saturday night, but keep your impulsive natures in mind, else you regret your decisions come morning.

Morning:

Night:

5. GREETING YOUR COWORKERS/CLASSMATES IN THE MORNING
If I haven’t stressed this point enough: Take time to sleep! ADHD’rs need it, or else, like Cinderellas at midnight, we turn into dreaded honey badgers.

When you’ve had enough sleep:

When you haven’t:

6. WHEN I'M STARVING AND SOMEONE WANTS TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH ME
Another one of my top five ADHD principles to live by: Remember to eat! If you don’t snack throughout the day, your energy will deplete, you’ll likely turn as snippy as this old-fashioned dog.

7. WHEN MY FRIEND IS TAKING FOREVER TO GET READY

Patience, my friends, patience. I know that friend of yours is taking forever to blow dry his/her hair, put on clothes, and finally be ready to leave, but slamming down your palm and shouting nasty remarks isn’t the way to get what you want.

8. WHEN MY FRIEND SAYS SHES GOING TO STARBUCKS
Slooow down there, Snooki. While I love my coffee as much as the next ADHD’r, remember that caffeine can actually be accompanied by decrease in focus. Be conscious of your body and how many double espressos you can handle.

9. WHEN I HEAR WHAT SOME OF MY OLD FRIENDS FROM HIGHSCHOOL ARE UP TO
Those of us with ADHD are known to enjoy heavy helpings of pride (re: The Seven Deadly Sins: Pride & the ADHD Personality). Just remember: no matter how much you accomplish with all of your ADHD super powers, no one likes a braggart.

And finally…

10. TRYING TO WORK WITHOUT ADDERALL
Yup. We’ve all been there. If you have ADHD and are prescribed for Adderall or another stimulant medication, remember to plan ahead and take your medication, else you collapse like this adorable lop-eared bunny.
